There was a great variety of cars on show at the Cape Classic Car Show in Parow yesterday. They rangeed from as far back as 1902 automobiles, Model T Fords, Austin Sevens from the 1920s, a pristine 1934 yellow Rolls Royce right through to myriads of 1950s and 1960s cars, from Morris Minors to Mercedes Benzes of every shape, size, model and colour. Chevrolet Firenza (HC). 1971–5 (prod. unknown; 100 Can Am). 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé. F/R, 1158, 1256, 2507 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV), 5047 cm³ (V8 OHV). South African development of Vauxhall Viva (HC), with differences in badging and engine range. Range featured a 2·5-litre four, but collectors cherish the Can Am V8, a homologation special with a Chevrolet Camaro engine, built to compete in South African racing and a rival to the Ford Capri Perana, costing R5,800 at a time when the next top Firenza was R2,700.

She notched 250 000 km the other day and has earned me many times her worth. I am in total awe of her performance these last 5 years. I could tell you a story or 10 of how I’ve had to ‘druk’ her and maybe, just maybe then you would understand the deep sense of pride I have for her.
